Unless you are really new to the Internet you have probably heard people talk about Search Engine Optimization, White Hat and Black Hat techniques. But what does that all “really” mean?

The best traffic one can get is from the Search Engines and it is free. But how do you get all of this great free targeted traffic?

There are several factors that are involved and they use factors that are called “optimizing” your site. It works like this:

Say you are looking for information on “history of lighthouses“. When you type that into your favorite search engine search box you will then be presented with many different sites to go to. Based on your keyword(s) the search engines will serve up their top choices, in descending order of relevance, of the websites that have information about what you asked for.

The people that built good, information rich, sites using White Hat techniques will be the first ones to show up in that list. It is called “relevency” and is what the search engines do - they serve up relevant content - with the most relevant information (content) being first.

The more relevant your site is - for the keywords you are focusing on - the higher in the list your site will be. (There are several other factors involved but that is the basic premise.) These are sites that the search engines feel are the “authority” on the keyword typed into their search boxes.

So the boittom line is - The more “Authoritative” your site is, in the eyes of the search engines, the higher in the search engine ranking your site will show up. The higher your site shgows up the more traffic you get. The more traffic you get the higher your earnings will be from your site!

In the past couple of years there have been thousands upon thousands of “junk” sites that have been thrown up on the Internet. These sites were designed using Black Hat SEO methods - special software that “scraped” articles from other sites and “built” webpages. The only reason people put up these sites was to try and earn money.

They did NOT care if the information was plagarized, misinformation, good, bad or indifferent information. The only purpose was to fool the search engines and grab some quick profits - and it worked - for a few months.

The search engines have gotten much, much smarter now and these kinds of sites are being de-listed and banned right and left. I know of several cases where people went from earning $10 - $20,000, or more, per month last year to zero income today. Can they get their earnings back? Why - because they were banned from the search engines for using Black Hat methods.

However, when you build an Authority site your income just continues to grow month in and month out. Ever heard the term “Content is King”? That term is referring to sites that are content rich “Authority” sites. Because the content produced is authoritative in nature other sites will start linking to your site - sending you even more traffic. It continues to grow in this fashion and is like the snowball rolling off the top of a mountain - it can easily become an avalanche as it picks up momentum!
