How to Split Test Your Site Today Without Software

March 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

In a previous post, we discussed the importance of testing your webpages. You could start some by testing by using the built-in testing features of Aweber. We will show you how to begin testing your web pages without using any software. This can really improve the profitability of your business. We recommend using software to test. It has consistently shown us its value greatly outweighs any cost to buy or effort to implement.

Here’s how to start split testing without software.

The first step is to make sure you are getting traffic to your web pages. There are a number of ideas to generate traffic organically. This is a slow but cheap way to build your site. There is always adwords to generate traffic. The key is that you will need traffic to spilt test.

The second step is to decide what to test. There are a number of variables to consider such as:

1. Headline
2. Price
3. Testimonials
4. Bullet Points
5. Long vs. short sales letter.
6. bonuses
7. guarantee
etc.

The third step is to drive traffic your web page or pages to find out which one wins.

If you are using adwords or other methods where you can direct where traffic goes, then you can test your different pages at the same time. Simply set up two pages with different Paypal buttons. Drive at least 2,000 (5,000 is ideal) unique visitors to each page. Measure conversion by dividing the number of sales of each page by the number of unique visitors to those pages. The higher number wins.

If you are not in control of your traffic to your web pages, you can still test. Put up one form of the page for a week. Switch out the page for the other one you are testing. After a week, switch back to the first one. Repeat the process until you have driven at least 2,000 unique visitors to each version of the web page. Track sales and unique vistors each week in a spreadsheet. (Check out this great free office suite!) Measure conversion by dividing the total number of sales from each version of the page by the total number of unique visitors to each of those pages. The higher number wins.

You can take the winner and test it against another variation of the same element (headline, price, etc.) or test a new element.

Over time you will improve your conversion rate and profit pulling power of your sales page. Learning to test everything is the key to making profits on the internet.

Don’t be stupid, Test Everything!

That’s good, I like that. But one problem could be the traffic source. Traffic from different sources converts differently, so if your traffic varied from week to week you wouldn’t get an accurate result. A real time split test can prevent that. And my split test software is pretty easy to set up, and free: http://www.easysplittest.com

    Stephen,

Your point is a good one. Different traffic can convert differently. Traffic can change sources from week to week as well. However good information can still be had from using this method. It is not ideal but is much better than not testing. The other benefit is that it requires no software setup.

I have not used your software. I am going to try it out. If it is easy to set up, then it is the way to go.
